What is a yoga mala and the symbolism behind 108?

A yoga mala is a strand of 108 beads that are strung consecutively on one loop. The number 108 represents sacred energy, in that it is added (1 + 0 + 8) to equal 9, the number chosen to represent the divine. The purpose of the Global Mala is to unite the global yoga community from every continent, school or approach to form a "mala around the earth" through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108.
